A Handy Travel Guide for a Long Weekend in Prague

With beautiful architecture, amazing food and absolutely stunning scenery, it comes as no surprise that Prague ranks highly amongst mini-holiday destinations around this time of year. Considering the city experiences relatively distinct seasons throughout the year, it’s always a good idea to brush up on local info before heading off. From scheduling to weather and handy apps, here’s everything you need to known to fully enjoy your long weekend in Prague.
What to pack
As you might imagine, your holiday wardrobe will vary greatly depending on which time of year you’re travelling. Think light dresses and shorts if you’re travelling during the summer, however prepare yourself for some serious cold as the temperature will drop in winter. You’ll also be doing lots of walking so comfortable shoes are a must – the city’s cobbled streets and staircases are not built for heels! A cross-body bag is always a smart move for savvy tourists, pickpockets are rare in Prague but it’s always better to err on the side of caution. If you’ve left anything behind however there’s no need to panic as Prague is home to several international franchises and boutiques.
What you need to know – electronics and currency
The Czech Republic’s currency is the Koruna so you’ll need to exchange some cash either in your home country or through an exchange bureau or an ATM in the city. All electronics run on a type E electrical socket (two-prong plug) which might mean you may need to pack an adaptor for certain devices. Finally, don’t forget to pack your camera, this is certainly one picture-perfect city!
What to download – apps and beyond
Most of Prague’s highlights are spread out across the city so downloading a couple of apps before heading out might prove helpful. Google Maps is of course one of the leading apps used when travelling, also offering the opportunity to download maps beforehand for offline reference. We’d also recommend downloading Google Translate, which will prove handy with translating road names and signs, as well as Uber or Liftago if you’re not in the mood for walking. The app store is also teeming with several helpful travel guides such as Czech Film Trips which will lead you right to the city’s top filming locations, or the Prague Map and Walks app if you’re more into taking a leisurely stroll.
What to see
A minibreak in Prague offers the opportunity of discovering some of the city’s finest attractions and sites. We recommend drafting an itinerary and listing all the things you’d like to see. Many of Prague’s hot spots are found around the Old Town that includes a network of quaint alleyways leading to historic locations such as the Kinský Palace, St Nicholas Church and the Town Hall as well as the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn. Take time to discover the city’s incredible Castle Complex or treat yourself to a delicious dinner alongside the Vlatva River – bon voyage!
